Advocacy

Sexual and Reproductive Health

Women and girls in Uganda like their colleagues in Sub-Sahara Africa, face the consequences of unprotected sex, the burden of unwanted pregnancies and the risk of HIV infection. While the female condom offers dual protection, women who want to use it cannot access it.

The government of Uganda under international commitments to gender equality and development has an obligation of ensuring adequate supply of female condoms to all women but has so far failed to do so. Under our advocacy work, we lobby government to meet its commitment to the supply and promotion of the female condom in order to protect women’s health.

Maternal Health Advocacy

About 30% of many mothers in Uganda are responsible for transmission of HIV to their babies during pregnancy, labour and breastfeeding. We therefore advocate for improved and increased access by mothers to prevention of mother-to-child transmission services at our local authority level.

We also advocate for the rights of women to protection against HIV especially among discordant couples, and the rights accessing prevention of mother-to-child services without the consent of their sexual partners.

In addition, we advocate for women’s right against discrimination in the community, at health centres and the workplace. This includes the right to leave work in order to access health services and the right of women to access information on their diagnosis, prescription and treatment.
